Columbia Weekend, October 23 - 24, 2015
The inaugural Columbia Weekend got off to a lively start on Friday with an alumni reception at the Hokin Project, a student-run gallery at Columbia College Chicago. As a featured stop on the Wabash Arts Corridor (WAC) Crawl, the Hokin Project served as a great location for alumni to gather together and kickoff Columbia Weekend. Alumni admired the current exhibition, Hybrid Forms & Interdisciplinary Practice, while enjoying cocktails and hors d’oeuvres. President and CEO of Columbia College Chicago, Dr. Kwang-Wu Kim joined in the gathering, welcoming alumni to the first-ever Columbia Weekend and emphasizing the critical role that alumni play in the life of the college.
Saturday, the college’s official Alumni Day, began with the “Big Chicago” faculty panel moderated by Neil Pagano, Associate Dean of the School of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and featured a discussion on the experiential courses that immerse Columbia’s freshmen class in their new home town. Professors Dominic Pacyga, Raquel Monroe, and Alton Miller gave alumni a glimpse into the courses they teach and their unique themes, including “Chicago: The Global Metropolis,” “50 Years of Civil Rights in Chicago,” and “Big Chicago: Dance, Sex and Popular Culture.” Through these courses, students are establishing a real and unique connection to the city that serves as their campus.
That afternoon, alumni enjoyed a casual lunch with fellow alums and their families and were hosted on student-led campus tours. In the early evening, alumni met up and headed to Grant Park to watch The Halloween Gathering Parade in which Columbia’s Vice President of Student Success, Mark Kelly, served as Master of Ceremonies. With massive, moveable art displays, fire-eaters, and zombies performing to “Thriller,” the parade was quite a spectacle! It was especially fun to cheer for our students as they paraded their artwork down Columbus Drive.
Columbia Weekend is a celebration for and of students, parents, faculty, staff, and alumni. Be sure to join us next year! In the meantime, check out our Facebook Album and Instagram page for exciting photos from this great event!
